IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi Sant'Ambrogio

About

Founded in 1963 in Milan (Italy), the IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi in Milan, now IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi – Sant’Ambrogio (OGSA), since 2001 has been the first hospital for orthopedic admissions in the Lombardy Region and, with 6,000 prosthetic surgery interventions, 1,245 spinal arthrodesis interventions and 98% of cases of femoral fractures operated within 48 hours of hospital admission, it is the Milan reference center for diseases of the musculoskeletal system. Accredited with the National Health System (SSN), OGSA represents a center of excellence in clinical and pre-clinical biomedical research and in teaching activity as a teaching center for the Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery of the University of Milan.

Since April 2006 OGSA boasts the recognition of Scientific Hospitalization and Treatment Institute (IRCS) awarded by the Italian Ministry of Health in the discipline of “Diseases of the musculoskeletal apparatus”, and, for over ten years, the acquisition of certification according to the UNI EN ISO 9001 standard for health areas and the management of Scientific Research.

In August 2022 Galeazzi moved to the new hospital building in the “Life Science” technologic park MIND– Milan Innovation District. The building is designed according to the most innovative standards of Sustainability and Functionality and obtained the LEED GOLD V4 certification for environmental sustainability.

In the new OGSA building two centres of San Donato Group (the first private healthcare group in Italy) were merged: Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi, international reference centre for orthopaedic surgery and neurosurgery and Istituto Clinico Sant’Ambrogio, reference centre for cardiovascular and bariatric surgery.

The strength of the joint approach between researchers and clinicians lies precisely in the continuous and intense interaction between the different skills, which allows the problem to be addressed from multiple points of view, thus ensuring a more complete vision.

The IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant’Ambrogio (OGSA) has a Technology Transfer Office (TTO), responsible for protecting, promoting and developing the results of research to obtain innovative solutions for patients, increasing awareness of the advantages of collaborations with industry and promoting entrepreneurial culture among researchers and clinicians. The main objective of the TTO is to guide the innovation process, enhancing the results of the excellent research developed at OGSA in all areas of life sciences (medtech, biotech, healthtech). This process is conducted through partnerships with industry and the financial sector to create, not only research, but products capable of responding to unmet clinical needs of patients and/or consumers in the field of health and/or

wellbeing, through the creation of agreements with existing companies and/or the creation of spin-offs, to generate impact on society and economic returns for the territory.

OGSA is a center of excellence in clinical and pre-clinical biomedical research, mainly in the orthopaedics and musculoskeletal fields, with 4 focus areas:

Research line no. 1: Regenerative medicine: tissue engineering and cell therapy

Research line no. 2: Surgical, pharmacological and technological innovations

Research line no. 3: Innovative technologies and integrated approach for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders

Research line no. 4: Integrated pathophysiological mechanisms and laboratory diagnostics
