About
Turning academic discovery into cost competitive products produced at large scale, as an innovator, Rius Medical focuses on Cell therapy - the transfer of cellular materials into a patient for therapeutic purposes!
TechBio – the application of engineering to biology is what you will find at Rius Medical. An operating system on Stem Cells - “programming stem cells by gene over-expression” that’s what we are doing at Rius Medical as Generation THREE therapeutic red blood cells, that is red blood cells that do more than simply carry oxygen!
Traditional production models have all the cells made by hand in batches, by highly trained scientists sitting in a clean room. That’s not scalable. Rius Medical solving the scalability problem in cell therapy, implements Yamanaka’s discovery in 2006 that opened the way for cell reprogramming – i.e. DNA/genes added to cells for reprogramming.
Rather than mimicking the slow natural process of cell culture in cell therapy (e.g. Rubius Therapeutics), Rius Medical triggers specific genes in cells to change how they grow, making the scalability process faster. This approach includes both automation (Master Cell Bank) and cell encapsulation of therapeutic cargo - a unique selling proposition among cell reprogramming startups.
In contrast to Rubius Therapeutics’ batch approach, Rius Medical is continuous production via allogeneic cell therapies! That is a single source of cells to treat many patients. Cells are collected from 1x donor sample to create a master cell bank (MCB). The MCB is then used as the source to create cell populations that are processed according to the demands of the specific therapy. [It is not iPSC but bone marrow derived stem cells engineered as MCB for cultured red blood cells inclusive biologic “enzyme or antigen” cargo].
Advanced biomanufacturing and regenerative medicine, these fields have the potential to reshape the future of healthcare, offering innovative solutions to complex medical challenges. Yes, that’s “Scaling Deeptech: From Lab to Market”. "Artificial Intelligence, Biotechnology and Connected Ecosystem of Things" combine is what Rius Medical is developing as AI-powered Healthcare!
