About

The Institute for Electrical Machines, Drives and Rail Vehicles (IMAB) at TU Braunschweig is a leading interdisciplinary research and teaching center dedicated to electrification and sustainable power systems. The institute combines expertise in electrical machine design, power electronics, high-performance electromobility, inductive charging, and rail traction technologies. https://www.tu-braunschweig.de/imab

Research Areas

  • Electric Drives & Machines:
Advanced development of motors—from conventional to superconducting designs—optimized through electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical modelling, including rotor dynamics and high-speed stability analyses .

  • Power Electronics:
Design and reliability testing of compact, efficient converters using Wide‑Band‑Gap semiconductors such as SiC and GaN. The NetFlexum project exemplifies efforts to enhance lifetime and safety under diverse operating conditions.

  • Mobility Solutions:
Research spans electric vehicle drive systems, inductive wireless charging (e.g., IMAB–RACER and the “emil” electric bus project), and grid-supportive prosumer energy systems.

  • Aerospace Electrification:
Electric propulsion and cooling systems for aviation motors, including superconducting drives and modular machine topologies—for example, within the SE²A cluster.
