Geokompetenzzentrum Freiberg e.V. (GKZ) is an independent, non-profit triple-helix cluster organisation based in Freiberg, Saxony, Germany. We connect industry, research and academia, public authorities, municipalities and regional-development actors across the full value chain of mineral raw materials, geo-energy, geotechnics and environmental technologies.
GKZ is part of the Mining and Metallurgy Region of Saxony/Freiberg, one of Europe’s long-established centres of expertise in mining, metallurgy, materials and geosciences. Our regional ecosystem combines industrial heritage with advanced research, technology development and education. It extends from mineral exploration, mining and mineral processing to metallurgy, recycling, complex material development, environmental services, site regeneration, energy-related applications and, increasingly, high-technology value chains such as semiconductors and battery materials.
Our mission is to strengthen innovation, competitiveness and sustainability in the raw-materials, energy and geotechnical sectors. We provide a trusted platform for knowledge exchange, cooperation and project development. Through our members and partners, GKZ offers access to an interdisciplinary network of companies, SMEs, research institutes, universities, public authorities, municipalities, engineering and consulting organisations, and regional stakeholders.
Our key competence areas include critical and strategic raw materials; sustainable exploration, mining and mineral processing; recycling and secondary raw materials; circular economy and resource efficiency; geo-energy and geothermal applications; geotechnics and infrastructure; environmental, water and land management; post-mining transition and brownfield regeneration; as well as digitalisation, geodata and monitoring solutions for the natural-resources sector.
GKZ supports its members in identifying innovation opportunities, building national and international partnerships, developing collaborative projects and bringing research results into practice. Our services include partner brokerage, project development, market and technology intelligence, capacity building, cluster management, stakeholder engagement, communication, dissemination, exploitation support and intellectual-property-oriented innovation management. We are particularly committed to supporting SMEs in accessing knowledge, markets, funding opportunities and cross-sectoral cooperation.
At European level, GKZ contributes to research, innovation and regional-development initiatives, including Horizon Europe and related programmes. We have experience in Cooperation and Support Actions (CSA), Research and Innovation Actions (RIA), interregional cooperation and regional innovation activities. Our role in collaborative projects can include ecosystem building, stakeholder mapping and engagement, business and exploitation planning, dissemination and communication, capacity building, pilot-region access, policy dialogue and the transfer of solutions to companies and public-sector actors.
For Horizon Europe partnerships, GKZ offers a strong bridge between technology development and real-world uptake in industrial and mining regions. We are particularly interested in joining consortia that address the green and digital transition through circular and resilient raw-materials value chains, sustainable mining and processing, advanced recycling, material traceability, responsible sourcing, digital resource intelligence, environmental monitoring, clean-energy systems, geo-energy, industrial decarbonisation, climate adaptation and resilient infrastructure.
We also seek cooperation on the transformation of mining and resource-dependent regions. This includes the productive reuse of former mining and industrial sites, circular industrial ecosystems, local and regional energy solutions, skills development, new employment pathways, social acceptance and citizen engagement. We believe that smart and sustainable communities require not only digital technologies, but also secure access to raw materials, responsible resource management, climate-neutral industry, affordable and reliable energy, environmental quality and inclusive regional development.
GKZ is well connected within the European raw-materials and regional innovation landscape. We are a member of the European Cluster Collaboration Platform (ECCP), the European Technology Platform on Sustainable Mineral Resources (ETPSMR) and the Council of Mining and Metallurgy Regions of Europe (CoMMER). Through these networks and our own partnership base, we facilitate cooperation between local and regional ecosystems in Germany and across Europe.
We are looking to meet clusters, companies, research organisations, universities, cities, regions and public authorities interested in collaborative European projects on critical raw materials, circular economy, clean energy, digitalisation, resilient infrastructure and sustainable regional transformation.
