Modelling and digital twin expertise for sustainable industrial processes

About

We support industrial companies and research partners in understanding, designing and optimising complex equipment and processes through a combination of advanced physics-based modelling, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), reduced-order models and digital twins.

Our capabilities cover the full modelling chain, from detailed high-fidelity simulations to computationally efficient tools for design optimisation, operational support, and real-time applications. We use CFD and multiphysics modelling to analyse fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, combustion, chemical reactions and other phenomena relevant to industrial equipment. The knowledge generated through these detailed models can then be transferred into reduced-order or surrogate models, enabling fast simulations and their integration into digital twins, engineering applications and industrial decision-support tools.

A key area of expertise is modelling and optimising thermal and energy-intensive industrial processes, including furnaces, boilers, burners, heat exchangers, preheaters, and other thermal equipment. Our work addresses challenges such as improving energy efficiency, reducing emissions, recovering waste heat, electrification and the transition towards low-carbon fuels.

Decarbonisation is a major focus of our current activities. We work on technologies related to hydrogen production and utilisation, hydrogen and fuel blends, industrial combustion, heat recovery, renewable energy integration and the transformation of conventional thermal processes towards low-carbon operation. We can support the development of new equipment as well as the adaptation and optimisation of existing industrial assets.

nablaDot also develops digital twins for industrial processes, combining physics-based models, operational data and fast reduced-order models. These tools can support equipment design, process optimisation, monitoring, scenario analysis and operational decision-making. Our approach bridges detailed engineering knowledge and Industry 4.0 technologies, making advanced simulation accessible within day-to-day industrial workflows.

We have extensive experience participating in European and national R&D and innovation projects, collaborating with industrial companies, SMEs, universities, research centres and technology providers. Our participation in European initiatives has covered areas such as advanced manufacturing, high-performance computing, cloud-based engineering, energy systems, industrial digitalisation and digital twins. This experience allows us to contribute both specialised technical expertise and an industry-oriented perspective to collaborative Horizon Europe projects.

We are particularly interested in collaborations related to:

  • Digitalisation and digital twins for industrial processes

  • Advanced modelling, CFD, multiphysics and reduced-order models

  • Energy-intensive and thermal industrial processes

  • Industrial energy efficiency and waste heat recovery

  • Electrification and hybrid heating technologies

  • Hydrogen, alternative fuels and low-emission combustion

  • Industrial decarbonisation and reduction of CO₂ and pollutant emissions

  • Advanced design and optimisation of industrial equipment

  • Integration of physics-based models, data-driven models and AI

  • High-performance computing and accelerated engineering simulation

  • Horizon Europe collaborative R&D projects

We are interested in joining consortia where our modelling and digitalisation capabilities complement expertise in industrial technologies, manufacturing, materials, hydrogen, energy systems, AI, and data technologies, helping move innovative concepts from detailed engineering analysis to practical industrial deployment.
