CiMUS - Center for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases
Acerca de
The Center for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases (CiMUS) of the University of Santiago de Compostela is dedicated to cutting-edge research in the field of chronic diseases. Our mission is to generate high-impact knowledge that is connected to society and benefits patients.
Research at CiMUS is organized into two major programs: Molecular Mechanisms of Chronic Diseases and Integrative Translational. Together, they connect fundamental discoveries with clinical application, with a strong emphasis on technology transfer and therapeutic innovation.
CiMUS is an open and collaborative center, fostering partnerships with universities, hospitals, companies, and innovation hubs across Galicia, Spain, and worldwide.
Currently, the center holds dual accreditation at both regional and national levels. At the regional level, it has been recognized as a CIGUS Center by the Xunta de Galicia (ED431G/2023/02), acknowledging the quality and impact of its research. This accreditation is funded by the Regional Ministry of Education, Science, Universities and Vocational Training and co-financed by the European Union through the Galicia FEDER 2021–2027 Program. At the national level, CiMUS has recently been awarded the María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence distinction, granted by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.
Research Programs:
Molecular Mechanisms Program
This program investigates the molecular processes underlying major chronic diseases—obesity and metabolism, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegeneration, and cancer. The aim is to deepen our understanding of these mechanisms to identify new biological targets and to drive the development of innovative strategies for prevention and treatment.
Integrative Translational Program
This program focuses on developing new therapies and disruptive technologies—ranging from drug screening and nanomedicine to genomic medicine, theragnostics, and proton therapy. It aims to accelerate the transformation of basic discoveries into clinical solutions, paving the way toward personalized and precision medicine.
