Medium-voltage direct current microgrids

Project Management and Developement at CEA - INES

Le Bourget du Lac, France

About

Medium-voltage direct current networks facilitation the electricity distribution to power MW scale industrial appliances from solar energy and local storage.

The advantages :

  • drastically reduced cable sections to keep electrical losses low

  • simplified integration of solar power plants to green production,

  • simplified integration of storage to secure energy supply

  • simplified modular planning of the electricity system, notably through the absence of harmonics

  • recovery of braking energy from motors (e.g. robots).

This type of local electricity distribution is highly innovative. There are already several initiatives for low-voltage DC distributions. Medium voltage DC is better suited to applications above 1 MW. An ongoing project (DC-Power) demonstrates medium-voltage DC networks for a hydrogen electrolyser station and a data centre.

I'm looking for partners interested in setting up a demonstrator on the DC powered industrial appliances.
