International Debate Education Association

The International Debate Education Association (IDEA) is a global network of debate organisations, registered in the Netherlands, with over 20 national member organisations and more than 800 youth clubs worldwide. For over 25 years, IDEA has been working to make debate education more accessible and to develop its potential as a pedagogical tool.

At its core, debate is a structured dialogue on a set topic, in which participants are required to research, construct and defend arguments while engaging critically with opposing perspectives. This makes it a uniquely powerful vehicle for developing critical thinking, civic awareness and communication skills. IDEA builds on this foundation by designing, implementing and evaluating argumentation-driven pedagogies for both formal and non-formal education settings. Our work spans curriculum development, training of trainers (for teachers, youth workers and adult education providers), the production of open educational resources, and the organisation of international training programmes and events. We take an evidence-driven approach, partnering with universities and research institutions to study the outcomes of debate-based learning and ensure our methods are grounded in research.

Our current strategic priorities include advancing critical thinking and media literacy pedagogy, supporting democratic participation through deliberative approaches, expanding access to debate and oracy education in underrepresented communities, and strengthening the capacity of local organisations to deliver high-quality educational programmes.
