About

The Comparative Research Network (CRN) Berlin is a non-profit research organisation dedicated to conducting and facilitating comparative studies on pressing societal issues. Based in Berlin, CRN specialises in analysing diverse approaches, policies, and social dynamics across different geographical and cultural contexts, particularly within Europe. Their work focuses on sustainable development, social innovation, urban and rural transformations, and the role of diverse actors in shaping the future. CRN is actively involved in conceptualising, developing, and implementing research and innovation projects, frequently within European funding frameworks.

CRN's core mission and methodologies are aligned with the objectives of the New European Bauhaus initiative.

  • Sustainability, Participation, and Placemaking: CRN's research directly investigates how communities and places can be transformed to become more sustainable, equitable, and vibrant. CRN explores the practicalities of implementing green solutions (Sustainability), the effectiveness of different methods for involving citizens in local development (Participation), and how collaborative processes can shape the quality and character of built and natural environments (Placemaking). By comparing approaches taken in different Euroepan countries, CRN provides valuable insights into successful strategies for NEB-inspired transformations. At the same time CRN implements those processes directly in communities.

  • Multi-Actor Approach (MAA) and Co-Creation: A cornerstone of CRN's methodology is the Multi-Actor Approach (MAA). Recognizing that complex challenges require diverse perspectives, CRN actively involves a broad range of stakeholders – including researchers, citizens, policymakers, businesses, NGOs, and artists. This isn't merely consultation; it's a process of co-creation. Through MAA, CRN facilitates environments where citizens and researchers work together from the initial stages to jointly define problems, develop research questions, design activities, and co-create solutions and project outcomes. This ensures that the research is not only academically rigorous but also grounded in real-world needs, local knowledge, and lived experiences. This co-creative methodology is precisely what the NEB champions for building a movement that combines sustainability, aesthetics, and inclusion from the ground up.
