Assistive Robotics for People with Disabilities

Professor at Royal Holloway University of London

Surrey, United Kingdom

About

This project aims to develop next-generation assistive robotic systems enhanced with generative AI, multimodal perception, and advanced content generation technologies to support people with disabilities in achieving greater independence and social inclusion. The system will combine robotics with deep learning, image-to-text understanding, and text-to-image/audio generation to enable intuitive, adaptive, and accessible human–robot interaction in real-world environments such as homes, workplaces, and care facilities.

The proposed solution will allow assistive robots to interpret complex visual scenes through image-to-text models, understand user intentions via natural language and speech, and generate context-aware responses using text-to-speech and text-to-image capabilities for improved communication. Generative AI will also support personalized assistance, such as creating visual aids, simplifying information, and producing adaptive audio instructions tailored to individual needs and cognitive profiles.

Aligned with Horizon Europe Cluster 2 priorities, the project promotes social inclusion, accessibility, and equality through trustworthy and human-centric AI and robotics. It strengthens independent living for vulnerable groups while ensuring ethical, transparent, and privacy-preserving deployment of generative technologies. Expected outcomes include assistive robotic prototypes, multimodal generative AI models, and inclusive design frameworks that advance Europe’s leadership in socially responsible AI-driven robotics.
