About

Mesoyios Research Center (MCMR)

The Mesoyios Research Center (MCMR)  is a multidisciplinary research and applied-knowledge hub of Mesoyios College, dedicated to advancing sustainable, inclusive and regenerative development in mountainous and rural regions, with a primary focus on the Troodos Mountains and rural Cyprus.

Building on Mesoyios College’s academic strengths in Hospitality, Tourism, and Business, and inspired by the strategic vision of the National Strategy for the Development of the Troodos Mountain Communities, the Center transforms the lessons learned from the earlier university initiative into a flexible, research-driven and community-embedded model of territorial development.

The Center focuses on tourism experience creation, regenerative tourism, and rural entrepreneurship, positioning tourism not as an extractive industry, but as a catalyst for local wellbeing, ecological regeneration and resilient rural economies, in line with Triple Bottom Line principles (People, Planet, Prosperity).

Mission

To advance place-based research, innovation and education that support regenerative tourism, sustainable hospitality and resilient rural economies, enabling mountainous and rural territories—starting from the Troodos Mountains in Cyprus—to unlock their endogenous potential through Smart Specialisation (S3) and territorial innovation approaches.

Smart Specialisation Logic (S3)

The Center operates as an S3-enabling structure, supporting the Entrepreneurial Discovery Process (EDP) by bringing together:

  • higher education and research,

  • local and regional authorities,

  • SMEs and tourism enterprises,

  • civil society and community actors.

Within this framework, the Center contributes to the identification, testing and scaling of priority domains where the Troodos region demonstrates comparative and competitive advantage, including:

  • Sustainable & Regenerative Tourism

  • Experience Economy & Cultural/Nature-Based Tourism

  • Rural Hospitality & SME Innovation

  • Agri-tourism, food heritage and local value chains

  • Skills, green competences and digital transition in rural areas

Tourism is approached not as a stand-alone sector, but as a cross-sectoral S3 domain, linking culture, environment, entrepreneurship, education and innovation ecosystems.

The Center acts as:

  • A research platform for applied studies, EU-funded projects and international collaborations

  • A knowledge bridge between academia, local authorities, businesses and communities

  • A living laboratory for regenerative tourism practices in Troodos villages

  • A strategic contributor to rural resilience, youth retention, skills development and place-based growth

By embedding research within the social, cultural and natural fabric of Troodos, the Mesoyios Center for Regenerative Tourism & Rural Development aspires to become a reference point for Mediterranean mountainous regions, demonstrating how education, tourism and business can jointly regenerate places and communities.
