OptoBac Biotech is an innovative deep-tech biotechnology company dedicated to combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) through the development of next-generation, light-activated antimicrobial biomaterials and self-disinfecting smart surfaces. Operating at the dynamic intersection of photobiology, molecular microbiology, toxicological biochemistry, and advanced materials engineering, OptoBac bridges translational academic science and scalable industrial solutions through active bilateral R&D initiatives between Brazil and Italy, supported by leading academic centers such as the Università degli Studi di Parma and major regional and international deep-tech programs. The company’s proprietary platform technology leverages Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT) by combining sustainable, non-toxic natural photosensitizers—such as rationally engineered plant-derived bioactive compounds—with visible ambient or non-coherent LED light illumination. Unlike conventional chemical disinfection protocols that provide only transient surface decontamination and accelerate bacterial resistance mechanisms, or traditional heavy-metal-based coatings (such as silver, copper, or zinc) that raise persistent cytocompatibility, environmental accumulation, and leaching concerns, OptoBac’s platform utilizes precision covalent tethering, silane coupling matrices, and biocompatible polymeric hydrogels. This strategic molecular architecture ensures durable, non-leaching, contact-dependent microbial photoinactivation upon exposure to safe, non-UV visible light through the continuous, localized generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This multi-target photodynamic mechanism delivers robust, broad-spectrum eradication of biofilm-forming, critical-priority, and multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens—including ESKAPE bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, and emerging multidrug-resistant fungi like _Candida auris_—without inducing microbial tolerance or chemical resistance pathways. OptoBac’s translational pipeline focuses on two core application verticals: first, durable, transparent, photoactive surface coatings designed for high-touch healthcare infrastructure, patient-room contact points, clinical diagnostic devices, cleanrooms, and biomedical instrument housings; and second, advanced bioactive hydrogel matrices and smart dressings engineered for chronic wound care, localized surgical-site infection control, and photoactive biofilm breakdown. At Meet in Italy for Life Sciences (MIT4LS), OptoBac Biotech is actively seeking strategic partnerships to drive European clinical translation, regulatory conformity, and commercial scaling. We invite collaboration with medical device and equipment manufacturers interested in B2B/OEM surface functionalization and co-development; hospitals, healthcare networks, and clinical research organizations for pilot demonstration trials and in-hospital validation; academic and translational research institutions for joint collaborative grant consortia (such as Horizon Europe, EIC Accelerator, and Eurostars); as well as deep-tech, life sciences, and ESG-oriented venture capital investors seeking disruptive, scalable biotechnological solutions addressing one of global healthcare's most pressing clinical challenges.
