Smart Implants: Turning Orthopaedic Implants into Wireless Data Generators
Senior Engineer at RADIO6ENSE
Rome, Italy
About
Orthopedic implants' main function is to restore mechanical functions. Once implanted, however, they mostly become silent objects: clinically critical, but digitally invisible. We stop knowing which device it is, how it is doing, or what is happening around it.
RADIO6ENSE's batteryless wireless sensors, embedded into orthopedic devices, can transform implants into data generators, enabling identification and traceability, as well as early detection of anomalies such as infection monitoring, strain and deformation. So far, RADIO6ENSE has demonstrated the technical feasibility of through-the-body battery-free wireless sensing for multiple orthopedic implants: bone plates, intramedullary nails, hip prosthesis, dental implants.
