About
Centro de Biotecnologia Agrícola e Agro-alimentar do Alentejo (CEBAL) is a private, non-profit R&D unit located in Beja, Portugal. It has the mission to develop scientific and technological knowledge in biotechnology field applied to agroforestry, agro-food, animal and plant genomics, bioinformatics, and waste valorization for a sustainable use of resources. CEBAL combines R&D activities with technology transfer, being highly involved in postgraduate teaching and training (Masters and PhD students), as well formation of highly skilled fellows. CEBAL has several science dissemination activities, reinforcing the need to spread technical and scientific outputs to potential users. CEBAL started its activity in 2008, currently has 22 institutional associates, and employs 36 researchers, including 10 PhD holders and 12 PhD students. CEBAL has been granted with several fundamental and applied research projects, as well business co-promotion and technology transfer projects. CEBAL´s scientific impact has been recognized by several national and international awards, has 125 international publications in recognized journals with peer-review, and 8 international patents. CEBAL is part of the Research Unit MED - Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development, classified with Excellent, and belongs to the Associated Laboratory CHANGE - Global Change and Sustainability Institute, generating R&D synergies and creating competitive and sustainable development strategies.
