Biohellenika S.A was founded at 2006 and is an internationally recognized cord blood processing and storage facility with its main offices and laboratories in Thessaloniki and offices in Athens Greece. Currently it stores more than 30,000 umbilical cord blood units, 20,000 units of Wharton Jelly stem cells, and over 2,500 dental stem cell units.  It is accredited by AABB and operates in 7 countries as Greece, Italy, Serbia, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Cyprus and Philippines and has successfully provided cord blood stem cell grafts for autologous transplantation as well as is actively involved in stem cell therapies and successfully releases for autologous therapies. Biohellenika S.A owns 5 patents and is ready to fill more than 5 new patents. Biohellenika owns a diagnostic molecular biology and biochemistry laboratory, performing prenatal diagnosis, paternity tests, PCR tests and other specialized tests focusing in gynecological and fertility tests, cancer diagnostic and follow up and biological aging assessment. The R&D department of Biohellenika S.A is in collaboration with distinguished Academic Professors and research centers and is preparing new services and applications in the field of Stem Cells, Genomics and Molecular Analysis, Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering and participates in national and international grants. The R&D department has developed know how, for services such as mesenchymal stem cells from the whole length of the umbilical cord (patented and used), stem cell extraction from placenta (patented and used), VSEL stem cells collection and storage  from umbilical cord blood (used), mesenchymal stem cell collection from deciduous teeth (used), collection and storage of mesenchymal stem cells from the adipose tissue (used), collection of stem cells from menstrual blood, immune cell collection and storage (such as dendritic cells, monocytes, NK cells and T lymphocytes), Amniotic membrane collection and preparation for ophthalmology use, fibroblast culture for aesthetic use and wound healing, cartilage cells culture for orthopedic use, expansion of haematopetic stem cells, skin culture for use in burns, IPS cell production, and products such as an anti aging liposome based crème with PRP (used), a special PRP Fibrin that can also contain IL1 shed receptor (used), and a CHO based cell line producing Interferon beta. The know how of the R&D department allows the production of cat T cells and any transgenic cell line. The R&D department of Biohellenika S.A has published more than 50 scientific papers, received several awards, and has successfully completed 9 national collaborative research Grants.

About me

George Koliakos was born in Thessaloniki Greece at 1956. He is a graduate of medicine at the Medical School Aristotle University (MD 1979) and has a doctoral degree in Biochemistry from the same school (1983). He specialized in Nuclear medicine (1987) He served as a postdoctoral associate at the medical school of the university of Minessota USA (1987-1989) and was a visiting research professor at the university of Miami USA (1993). Since 1989 he is a faculty member of the Medical School   Aristotle University serving since 2012 as a full professor of Biochemistry, since 2023 a professor emeritus. His scientific work includes cell culture and cell cryopreservation since 1987. George Koliakos has co authored 205 peer reviewed papers listed in Pubmed and Scopus with more than 6000 citations and a current Hills Index of 40.

He served a s a member of the board of the Hellenic Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Cofounder and associate manager of Hippocrates Diagnostic Center in Thessaloniki (1991-2005). Currently, founder president and CEO of Biohellenika biotechnology company (since 2006).

He was a principal investigator in KESY 1992, Pythagoras 1 2003, and PRAXE A 2003 grants  funded by the Hellenic General secretariat of Research and Technology.

Co-investigator in a Science program (1990) funded by the EU,  KESY 1997, PENED 2000, ENTER 2001, PENED 2002, PENED 2004 and Pythagoras 2 2004, grants funded by the Hellenic General secretariat of Research and Technology.

He has been granted 3 international and 4 Hellenic national Patents.
