Helmut Hlavacs

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Helmut Hlavacs received his master’s degree (1993) and his PhD (2001) from the Technical University of Vienna in Technical Mathematics. Currently he is the head of the Research Group Eduction, Didactics and Entertainment Computing (EDEN) at the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Vienna, as well as full professor.

Prof. Hlavacs has done research in artificial intelligence and machine learning, computer games and virtual reality. His current research interests include issues of entertainment computing, including game engines, mobile entertainment, multimedia performance, computer game technology, serious games, inclusion and communication for special interest groups.

This also includes long standing cooperations with Vienna Medical University and Sigmund Freund University (Clinical Psychology, apps for treatment of anxiety, depression, self harm of adolescents, gambling addiction, stereotypes) and the outpatient clinic of St. Anna Children's Hospital (Patient diaries, gamification after stem cell transplants). Currently we develop a scrap book app for documenting patient healing journeys.
