About me
Dr. Magomere graduated from the University of Nairobi with a BSc Agriculture-Crop science option (Hons) in 1997 and further attained an M.A. in Rural Sociology and Community Development in 2003 and an MSc. in Genetics and Plant Breeding in 2004 from the same university. He proceeded to obtain a PhD (plant breeding, molecular genetics and biotechnology) from the University of Guelph/University of Nairobi in 2014. Further to this Dr. Magomere has participated in a marker assisted selection course at Kawanda research institute, Uganda and a course on genetic manipulation in agriculture at Osaka prefecture university, Japan.
Dr. Magomere previously worked with the University of Nairobi as a member of the academic staff from 2007 to 2015, where he was engaged in teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students and participated in other departmental activities. Currently, he works with Kenyatta University in the department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology as a lecturer.
Dr. Magomere has wide research experience in genetics, plant breeding, crop biotechnology, molecular genetics, genomics and evaluation of GMOs (ABS sorghum for ecological consequences of integration in traditional cropping systems) and has authored several publications in peer reviewed journals and other scientific forum.
Dr. Magomere has been a principal investigator on a VLIR-VOS Belgium, TEAM 2018 projects, from 2015 to 2023 that has great focus on biotechnology applications on Melia volkensii clones with Collaborators-UGent, University of Nairobi, KEFRI and Better globe forestry. He has previously worked in collaboration with Africa Harvest in carrying out confined field trials for ABS sorghum as an investigator and consultant. He has been engaged in empowering scientists and bridging knowledge and policy gaps to promote gene editing technology, as well as ensuring the use of gene editing technology to enhance food security in Africa within a Gene Editing Technology Initiative(GETI) with Crop Life International, Africa Harvest and NASAC. He has vested interest in melia, citrus and sorghum biotechnology. In his scientific endeavors, he has been engaged in development and designing technologies in to packages that can be applied comfortably in alleviating poverty and creating wealth among the masses of resource poor.
