Breakout A - Ignite Talk & Workshop

Location:Plenary Hall - LeibnizTrack:Diversity and regional development

Theme: Demographic Change in Structurally Weak Regions
Featuring: Prof. Dr Stefan Zundel

Investment in science has a positive effect on growth. However, this correlation does not always apply everywhere. For countries, this correlation has been empirically proven; for regions, this is not always the case. In peripheral regions with demographic problems in particular, we have frequently found in Europe that an increase in scientific potential in a region has had little benefit for the region's innovation system. This finding is reflected in the scientific literature in the term ‘innovation paradox’: the regions that would benefit most from an innovation boost are the least able to translate scientific impulses into successful business ideas. The presentation will explore the causes of the innovation paradox and what can be done to overcome it.

The Lakeside Science & Technology Park is a successful model for overcoming the innovation paradox. The Lausitz Science Park in Germany aims to become one. Some thoughts on best practice will conclude the ignite talk.

Workshop Objective: To provide participants with practical insights into the development and implementation of science parks as tools for regional development, and to foster the exchange of best practices, particularly with a focus on cross-regional collaboration such as between Lausitz and Lakeside Park.
