About me
Guido Vanham trained as a medical doctor in the 70’s and specialized in internal medicine 80’s. He obtained his PhD in 1994 at the University of Leuven and spent most of his medical and research career in Antwerp, focusing on pathogenesis of HIV, HTLV-1, TB and tropical infectious diseases, with a special research interest in the role of dendritic cells in prevention of HIV infection.
During the 90’s and 2000’s he spent several research stays at the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland (OH), at the Makarere University in Kampala (Uganda) and the Cayetano Heredia University in Lima (Peru). Until July 2019 he was a full time professor at the Virology Unit of the Institute of Tropical Medicine and a part time (10 %) professor at the Biomedical Department of the University of Antwerp. He published 194 papers in international journals (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=Vanham%2C%20G%5BAuthor%5D&sort=date&page=20) and mentored 20 PhD students.
Since the COVID epidemic, he writes a blog for the infectious diseases research and clinical practice community (with 356 episodes on https://www.icpcovid.com/en/news), acting as special academic staff of the Institute of Global Health of the University of Antwerp and as a consultant for the Belgian Health Care Knowledge Center (KCE).
