VITO makes the link between Science & Industry

VITO covers several research domains and application areas (about 40). Our combined know-how and transversal way of working allow us to look at each challenge from many perspectives and accelerate the breakthrough of innovations worldwide.

We have concentrated our research activities on three domains where we aim to maximise our impact in Flanders, Europe, and globally: a regenerative economy, a healthy living environment, and resilient ecosystems. ​​

Specific to healthy living we focus on:

• solutions for the rising cost of Healthcare Services

• patient safety (we evaluate e.g. AI driven medical device software)

• personalised medicine & prevention (e.g. Pharmacogenomics, Personal Reference Interval, remote sensing of vector propagation, etc…)

• integration of technological advancements in regulatory science (IVDR, MDR, AI pact, support to Notified Bodies, etc).

• **HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT:**​

  A healthy and sustainable living environment for all is a core element of VITO's vision. Here, we focus on how to maintain balance between the human environment, nature, agriculture, and industry. ​

  ​We study the impact of substances on human and environmental health, including water, soil, and air quality. ​

  We also explore how to use our limited space in the most efficient and sustainable way for all sectors of society. The unique characteristics of Flanders, with its high economic activity and dense population in a small area, make it an ideal pilot environment to explore sustainable ways of combining housing, industry, agriculture, and mobility. These insights have global relevance.​

  A third focus within this domain is to ensure environments with a high level of citizen comfort, where fossil-free, affordable, and healthy living in a climate-resilient environment is accessible to all.​​
