About

The National Institute of Chemistry is a scientifically excellent and internationally recognised research institution based in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Through cutting-edge basic and applied research, the Institute addresses key societal challenges, with a strong focus on sustainable energy, climate change mitigation, environmental protection and the circular economy.

Its research connects materials science, chemical engineering, analytical chemistry, biotechnology, environmental protection and sustainable technologies, supporting the development of solutions relevant to Slovenia, Europe and the global transition toward a low-carbon future. The Institute also plays an important role in transferring knowledge and innovation to industry, strengthening technological development and long-term societal resilience.

A central strategic initiative in this area is the Center for Development, Demonstration and Training for Carbon-Free Technologies in Kisovec, Zasavje region. The Center is being established as a bridge between research and industry, with advanced infrastructure for the development, demonstration and training of battery, hydrogen and carbon dioxide technologies. Its aim is to support the green transition, improve energy sustainability and resilience, and accelerate the deployment of carbon-free solutions in industry and everyday life.

Particular emphasis will be placed on battery technologies and hydrogen-related technologies, including demonstration of H₂ and CO₂ technologies, as well as the testing and validation of advanced energy systems. By supporting faster transfer of research results into practical applications, the Center will contribute to climate neutrality, energy independence, industrial transformation and the just transition of the former coal region of Zasavje.
