From biomass to value.**WHIN is an Italian R&D company developing innovative, sustainable biomaterials and biopolymer solutions from renewable plant-based resources.Our research started from water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), a rapidly growing and underutilised biomass, and led to patented technologies for transforming plant-derived resources into innovative materials for food-contact applications. Our proprietary approach combines biomass valorisation, biotechnology and material science to develop alternatives to conventional fossil-based plastics.WHIN is now extending this technological platform to other sustainable botanical resources, including Sicilian Rhus coriaria (sumac), exploring its potential as a feedstock for the production of PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates), biodegradable biopolymers produced through microbial processes.The objective is to develop a new generation of bio-based materials suitable for food packaging and other applications where safety, sustainability and controlled migration are critical. The technology is designed to address the need for materials that can reduce dependence on fossil resources while offering a safer and more circular approach to food-contact materials.WHIN is currently seeking strategic and financial investors able to support the transition from R&D to industrial development. Investment is needed not only for scale-up and pilot production, but also for regulatory, toxicological and food-contact testing, industrial validation, process engineering, management and international market development.
