About me
Lord Vallance KCB FRS FMedSci FRCP HonFREng was appointed Minister of State for Science on 5 July 2024. Previously, he served as the Government Chief Scientific Adviser (GCSA) from 2018 to 2023, as well as the National Technology Adviser and Head of the Government Science and Engineering Profession.
Before his government roles, he was President of R&D at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) from 2012 to 2017, having joined the company in 2006 as Head of Drug Discovery. During his tenure, numerous medicines were approved globally for conditions such as cancer, rare childhood diseases, asthma, and HIV.
Prior to GSK, Lord Vallance was a clinical academic at UCL, where he led the Division of Medicine and worked as a consultant physician in the NHS. His research covered a broad spectrum, from medicinal chemistry to large-scale health data analysis.
He was elected to the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1999 and the Royal Society in 2017. He has held various leadership roles in health research organizations, including the UK Office for Strategic Co-ordination of Health Research (OSCHR), UK Biobank, and Genome Research Limited. Lord Vallance holds honorary fellowships and degrees from several prestigious institutions.
