Institute of Social Sciences (IDN) was established on July 10, 1957, initially organizing research in law, economics, history, and sociology. In the early 1960s it launched two pioneering centers—Demographic Research and Public Opinion—the first of their kind in Eastern Europe, and added a Philosophy department. For decades the Institute also functioned as a postgraduate school taught by leading scholars; it remained within the University of Belgrade until 1998.
Today the Institute operates through six research centers with roughly seventy researchers, including seventeen scientific advisers. Its mission combines fundamental research on key social phenomena, methodological advancement, researcher training, collaboration with national and international partners, and the application of findings to public policy. IDN researchers have produced hundreds of books and volumes, thousands of articles, and numerous complex projects and conferences. The Institute publishes the journal Stanovništvo (since 1963), co-founded Religija i tolerancija and Medicine, Law & Society, and keeps a library of about 140,000 books and journals.
