Predicting & Avoiding Road Crashes with AI and Big Data (HORIZON-CL5-2026-01-D6-14) — Partner Search
We’re building a Horizon Europe RIA proposal to predict and prevent road crashes using trustworthy AI on diverse, large-scale mobility datasets. The topic targets proactive, real-time crash-risk prediction and decision support for road authorities and operators. Deadline: January 20, 2026 (RIA).
Opportunity summary
We aim to develop an AI-enabled predictive safety platform that fuses heterogeneous data (traffic flow, infrastructure condition, weather, in-vehicle/roadside sensors, incident logs, socio-demographics, event calendars, etc.) to:
-
Identify high-risk locations in advance so authorities can deploy targeted countermeasures, and
-
Detect safety-critical situations in real time to trigger timely interventions (e.g., VMS messages, speed harmonization, lane control, rerouting).
Example work packages (indicative)
-
Use-cases & data governance: legal/ethical framework, DPIA, DMP, KPIs.
-
Data fabric: connectors for traffic, infrastructure, weather, events, CCTV metadata; harmonization to EU mobility data-space patterns.
-
AI for risk prediction: near-real-time crash-risk modeling with explainability and uncertainty; bias & robustness testing.
-
Decision support & automation: triggering interventions (speed advisories, ramp metering cues, rerouting) via APIs/dashboards.
-
Pilots & impact: multi-site deployment, benefit-cost and safety impact using surrogate measures and (where possible) observed reductions.
-
Exploitation & standardization: open interfaces, policy briefs, contribution to standard bodies.
Why join this consortium
-
Strong alignment with EU Road Safety Policy 2021–2030 & Vision Zero goals and the call’s emphasis on proactive, data-driven prevention.
-
Builds on state-of-the-art EU projects and CORDIS guidance to use broader data (e.g., socio-demographics, security cameras, tourism/events) for richer risk signals.
-
Clear path to operational services for authorities and operators, not just research prototypes.
