We are a globally operating, not-for-profit, independent think tank and a research organisation. We were founded in 2005 and employm over 70 reserachers. We have five reserach strands on societal transformations: transformative governance, socio-ecological justice, urban transformations, transformations of democracy, and technology in society. We are part of 20+ Horizon Europe projects, often in SSH and policy-relevant roles. We also employ futures studies and co-creation apporaches frequently.
Example Work Package themes we could lead:
Transformative governance: e.g., roles and capacities of public administration, institutional innovation, policy integration, multi-level governance, mission-oriented governance, systemic change, governance tools for sustainability transitions.
Citizen participation and co-creation: e.g. experimentalist governance, experimentation models, scaling up experiments, democratic innovations for citizen deliberation, stakeholder participation, citizen science, social innovations, living labs.
Other roles we could take:
Connections between policy domains: Exploring interconnections, synergies, and tensions between biodiversity and other domains, e.g., economy, human wellbeing, liveability, culture, and security
Multi-actor engagement: Increasing agency of diverse actors, using collaborative methods to define shared goals and catalyze joint biodiversity action between e.g., the public and private sector and the civil society
Just transition: Considerations of social justice and inclusiveness in the initiatives and policies addressing biodiversity loss
Multi-level governance of biodiversity action: E.g., alignment of EU, National, regional and local biodiversity action, coordination and collaboration across domains
Policy interaction, recommendations and dissemination: e.g. societal change and impact pathways, roadmaps for future, policy recommendations, policy observatory, dissemination, exploitation and sustainability plans
Futures studies and methods: E.g., foresight, scenarios, visions, pathways, Delphi studies, weak signals, futures games, participatory and creative methods
Demos Helsinki is keen to provide SSH, policy and ethics expertise to biodiversity projects. Our research aims to understand transformative societal change and often involves participatory methods and futures studies to enhance environmental governance.
