About

The National Institute for Marine Research and Development “Grigore Antipa” (NIMRD), headquartered in Constanța, is Romania’s leading institution for marine scientific research and the sustainable management of Black Sea resources. With a tradition spanning more than five decades, NIMRD continues to serve as a center of scientific excellence, contributing to a better understanding of marine ecosystems, the protection of biodiversity, and the responsible use of natural resources.

The Institute’s mission is to generate scientific knowledge and innovative solutions that support the sustainable development of Romania’s coastal and maritime region. Our activities are carried out at the interface between science, public policy, and society, with the primary goal of conserving the marine natural heritage and strengthening Romania’s integration into the European and international research landscape.

NIMRD conducts both fundamental and applied research in key fields such as oceanography, marine ecology, biodiversity, aquaculture, biotechnology, living marine resources, pollution, and climate change. Its modern laboratories, field equipment, and research infrastructure, including scientific research vessels, enable the implementation of complex monitoring programs and comprehensive assessments of the status of marine and coastal ecosystems.
