National Scientific Center «Institute of Experimental and Clinical Veterinary Medicine»

National Scientific Center “Institute of Experimental and Clinical Veterinary Medicine” (NSC IECVM) is the first research centre in Ukraine devoted to animal health. It is located in Kharkiv and operates under the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine (NAAS). Its roots go back to 1923. The Centre combines fundamental and applied research, diagnostics, the development of biological products, and postgraduate and doctoral training.

The Centre has four departments, 13 laboratories, a research station, five research-manufacturing centres, a vivarium, a scientific library and an influenza A reference laboratory. Its laboratory work is carried out under a quality management system with an accreditation certificate.

Research areas

• Molecular diagnostics, genetic variability, ecology and phylogeography of infectious animal diseases

• Molecular mechanisms of epizootic processes, and immune system formation and immunodeficiency

• Epidemiological monitoring and forecasting of the main infectious and invasive diseases of livestock and of zoonoses

• Prevention and eradication of zoonoses, including tuberculosis, brucellosis, salmonellosis, listeriosis and campylobacteriosis

• Antimicrobial resistance and genomic characterisation of pathogens, including whole-genome sequencing

• Toxicology monitoring and quality control of feed, food and animal products

• Development of technologies and regulations for producing immunobiological preparations

• Implementation of international biosafety and biosecurity standards in laboratory and production practice

Cooperation and training. The Centre coordinates research with NAAS institutions, the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, and Ukrainian agricultural universities. It also works with international partners, including the National Veterinary Research Institute in Pulawy (Poland) and German research institutions. It offers postgraduate and doctoral programmes and organises international conferences. It publishes two scientific journals: the Journal for Veterinary Medicine, Biotechnology and Biosafety and the Journal for Veterinary Medicine.
