Bundesamt für Naturschutz
About
The Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) is a senior federal authority responsible for technical, scientific, and administrative tasks in the field of nature conservation and landscape management. It enforces nature conservation laws, advises policymakers, provides research findings and data on nature and the landscape, and supports and oversees nature conservation projects and research initiatives. The responsibilities are defined by the Act on the Establishment of a Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfNG).
The BfN is one of four agencies within the purview of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN). Approximately 550 employees in Bonn, Leipzig, and on the island of Vilm near Rügen work in various fields to protect biodiversity and ensure the environmentally sustainable use of our resources. Sabine Riewenherm has served as President of the Agency since September 1, 2021.
