About

Massum Landscape Restoration Initiative

This is an emerging, landowner-led landscape restoration initiative in Roslagen, eastern Sweden, exploring how small privately owned properties can contribute to biodiversity recovery and ecological connectivity within a wider landscape.

The initiative centres on a 15.7-hectare property comprising woodland, former agricultural land and areas with potential for wetland and habitat restoration. Planned activities include restoring wooded pastures, introducing extensive conservation grazing, improving wetland hydrology and enhancing habitat diversity.

Research and landscape context

The initiative builds on a landscape science degree project examining historical land-use change in Massum between 1824 and 2017. Using historical cadastral maps, aerial photography and GIS analysis, the study documented the transformation of a historically multifunctional agricultural landscape into predominantly production-oriented woodland.

This research provides a foundation for identifying restoration opportunities and understanding the ecological consequences of long-term land-use change.

The property is located within a landscape containing valuable semi-natural grasslands, wooded habitats and nearby nature reserves. This offers opportunities to explore how restoration on smaller properties might strengthen habitat connectivity and complement conservation management in surrounding areas.

Potential demonstration and research activities

Massum could provide a practical setting for investigating:

  • Restoration of wooded pastures and extensive conservation grazing

  • Exploring agroforestry and silvopastoral approaches that combine grazing, trees, biodiversity conservation and sustainable land management

  • Wetland hydrology and restoration of previously drained land

  • Landscape-scale ecological connectivity and habitat mosaics

  • Integration of historical landscape analysis and GIS into restoration planning

  • Biodiversity monitoring and evaluation of restoration outcomes

  • Practical, financial and institutional barriers faced by small private landowners implementing nature restoration

The initiative is currently in the planning and partnership-development phase. Ecological baseline assessments and further site-specific investigations would be needed to inform restoration interventions and monitoring.

Collaboration opportunities

We are seeking connections with research institutions, Living Labs, European project consortia and other organisations developing collaborative approaches to ecosystem restoration.

Massum could potentially contribute as a pilot or demonstration site, providing landowner participation, local landscape knowledge and opportunities for field-based research and practical experimentation.

Beyond the physical site, the initiative aims to contribute to project development, stakeholder collaboration and knowledge exchange, particularly around approaches that enable smaller landowners to participate meaningfully in landscape-scale restoration.

We are especially interested in collaborations addressing implementation barriers and developing restoration models that can be adapted or replicated in other rural landscapes. This includes exploring how restoration, agroforestry and other forms of multifunctional land management can be integrated into viable approaches for small private landowners.
