About
The Higher Institute of Sciences
Applied Biologicals of Tunis
The Higher Institute of Applied Biological Sciences of Tunis is under the supervision of the University of Tunis-El Manar under the tutelage of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
It was created by Decree No. 1663 of August 4, 2003.
The Higher Institute of Applied Biological Sciences of Tunis (ISSBAT) is a public higher education and research institution affiliated with the University of Tunis El Manar (UTM), Tunisia, under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Established in 2003, ISSBAT is dedicated to excellence in education, scientific research, innovation, and capacity building in biological sciences and biotechnology.
ISSBAT offers multidisciplinary academic programmes in Biotechnology, Environmental Protection, Bioinformatics, and Applied Biological Sciences, providing students with theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and research-oriented training to address contemporary scientific, environmental, and societal challenges.
The institute hosts research activities spanning biodiversity conservation, environmental biotechnology, molecular ecology, evolutionary genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, microbiology, and environmental health. Its research teams contribute to understanding biological diversity, ecosystem functioning, environmental changes, and the sustainable management of natural resources.
The Research Laboratory “Bioresources, Environment and Biotechnology” (BeB, LR22ES04) contributes to these activities through interdisciplinary research integrating molecular biology, genomics, bioinformatics, and environmental sciences. Research interests include environmental DNA (eDNA), DNA metabarcoding, biodiversity monitoring, conservation genetics, phylogenetics, evolutionary genomics, and One Health approaches.
ISSBAT promotes the application of next-generation sequencing, portable molecular technologies, and computational approaches to biodiversity assessment, wildlife conservation, environmental monitoring, and ecosystem sustainability.
Through national and international scientific partnerships, ISSBAT seeks to strengthen research excellence, innovation, knowledge transfer, and capacity building, particularly within the Euro-Mediterranean and African research communities.
Horizon Europe Collaboration Opportunities
ISSBAT is interested in participating in international research consortia, particularly under Horizon Europe Cluster 6: Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment, and related programmes addressing biodiversity and ecosystem sustainability.
Our priority areas for collaboration include:
-
Biodiversity assessment, monitoring, and conservation.
-
Environmental DNA (eDNA), DNA metabarcoding, and biodiversity genomics.
-
Ecosystem restoration, ecological resilience, and climate change adaptation.
-
Conservation genetics and genomic characterization of threatened species.
-
Environmental biotechnology and sustainable management of natural resources.
-
One Health approaches integrating wildlife, ecosystems, and environmental health.
-
Innovative, accessible, and cost-effective molecular technologies for biodiversity monitoring.
-
Research capacity building, training, technology transfer, and Euro-African scientific cooperation.
ISSBAT welcomes opportunities to join or co-develop Horizon Europe research proposals, contribute scientific and technical expertise, and establish long-term partnerships with universities, research institutions, conservation organizations, and other stakeholders committed to biodiversity protection, environmental sustainability, and nature-based solutions.
