VÚMOP is a Czech public research institute specialising in soil monitoring and protection, soil and water conservation, and landscape management. Its basic and applied research supports agriculture, public administration and the sustainable use of natural resources.
Our research and expertise cover:
• Soil survey, mapping, monitoring and assessment of soil properties, quality and degradation.
• Protection against water and wind erosion, erosion-risk assessment and evaluation of erosion-control measures.
• Hydrology of agricultural and forest catchments, soil water regimes, runoff, sediment transport and water quality.
• Water retention, drainage and irrigation systems, and restoration of small watercourses and reservoirs.
• Soil contamination, reclamation of degraded land, peatland protection and landscape management.
• Land consolidation, rural development and applications of geographic information systems.
VÚMOP operates the SOWAC-GIS geoportal, providing thematic maps, spatial data, web map services and applications supporting soil protection and agricultural land-use decisions. These include soil mapping tools, land-use constraints, erosion-control planning and the agricultural soil erosion monitoring portal, which supports reporting, recording and evaluation of erosion events.
Our capabilities combine field investigations, laboratory analyses of soil, water and plant material, GIS, environmental modelling and remote sensing. Research results are transferred into practical methodologies, digital tools, expert assessments, advisory services and training.
VÚMOP welcomes collaboration with research organisations, universities, public authorities and practitioners. The Remote Sensing and Pedometrics Laboratory and the Department of Soil Survey are represented on this platform as contact points for scientific cooperation.
