CBQF - Centre for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry is an R&D centre at UCP, founded in 1990 and rated as Excellent in the national evaluation of R&D Units since 2019. CBQF is an Associate Laboratory since 2004, having been classified as Excellent in 2021. CBQF strives to be at the forefront of Biotechnology research applied to Food, Environment and Resources, and Biobased and Biomedical Products. It holds disciplinary competencies on biosciences, bioengineering, nutrition, and analytical chemistry, applied to thematic challenges focussed on the health and well-being of the citizen and the competitiveness of the agricultural and food systems. CBQF is housed in a purpose-built, state of the art facility that includes research dedicated laboratories to house its research groups and its seven Scientific Platforms: Analytical Chemistry; Tissue Culture and Molecular Biology; Packaging & Materials; Consumer & Sensory Science; Bioactives; Biophysics, and Kitchen Lab all coordinated by highly qualified technicians, with the possibility of designing and using prototypes and pilot scale equipment in the food, environmental and health R&D+I activities. CBQF is strongly active in national and international projects (50% in collaboration with industry), currently participating in 15 H2020/HE projects.
