About

Jagiellonian University in Kraków is the oldest university in Poland and one of the oldest in Europe. It is also one of Poland’s largest universities, with 32718 students, 1456 PhD students and 4979 academic teachers, out of which more than 5600 students and 262 teachers come from abroad. Since its foundation in 1364 JU has always been an international institution, welcoming students and academics from numerous European and non-European countries. This tradition continues and has been recognised as one of the key areas of The Jagiellonian University 2030 Strategy developed in 2021, which strongly emphasizes support for internationalization processes. This strategy is implemented through mobility programs, bilateral exchanges, international networks, the Una Europa alliance and many other initiatives.

Consistently ranked among the top universities in Polish and international league tables, JU is an important research and education centre in Europe. It has become one of the leading research centres in Poland, collaborating with major academic and scientific institutions from all over the world. The JU researchers and their achievements are widely recognised and appreciated at the international arena and so is its modern infrastructure.

The most unique large-scale projects run by JU include creation and development of research centres: National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS, Małopolska Centre for Biotechnology, Jagiellonian Centre for Experimental Therapeutics and Centre for Medical Genomics OMICRON. There are currently 981 research projects implemented at the JU, including 816 with national funds and 165 with foreign funds (these include 70 EU-funded projects – 56 Horizon Europe and 5 Horizon 2020, including 13 ERC grants) in both the sciences and humanities.
