About

The Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL is one of the world’s leading research institutes in organic agriculture and sustainable food systems. FiBL Switzerland conducts interdisciplinary and applied research at the interface of agriculture, biodiversity, ecosystems, climate, food systems and society, combining scientific excellence with strong engagement of farmers, businesses, policymakers and other stakeholders.

FiBL’s expertise relevant to the Horizon Europe NATURE Call includes biodiversity-friendly and agroecological farming systems, ecosystem services, sustainable land use, food-system transformation, environmental and spatial modelling, sustainability assessment, socio-economic and policy analysis, innovation adoption and scaling. FiBL applies integrated approaches ranging from farm- and landscape-level assessment to sectoral and food-system modelling, including analysis of synergies and trade-offs between agricultural production, biodiversity and ecosystem services.

FiBL also has strong experience in participatory and transdisciplinary research, co-creation with stakeholders, assessment of transformation pathways, and translating scientific evidence into practical and policy-relevant solutions. Current and previous research addresses, among other topics, biodiversity-friendly food systems, agroecology, land-use change, ecosystem services, sustainability transitions and the environmental impacts of agricultural systems.

For Horizon Europe NATURE proposals, FiBL is particularly interested in contributing to interdisciplinary consortia working on systemic transformative change for biodiversity, Living Labs and ecosystem restoration, biodiversity monitoring, nature-positive agricultural and food systems, and interactions between biodiversity, ecosystem services and socio-economic systems.

Potential FiBL contributions include:
• environmental, spatial and food-system modelling;
• sustainability and socio-economic assessment;
• biodiversity and ecosystem-service assessment in agricultural systems;
• agroecology and nature-positive farming approaches;
• stakeholder mapping, engagement and co-creation;
• Living Lab methodologies and multi-actor approaches;
• assessment of innovation adoption, scaling and replication;
• policy analysis, impact pathways and science-policy interfaces.
