About

Urban forests and green-blue infrastructure are losing their capacity to cool cities, hold water, store carbon, and support biodiversity. Heat, drought, storms, pests, and soil sealing are all increasing, and the neighbourhoods with the least green space are usually the most exposed. Municipalities increasingly ask citizens to plant, monitor, and care for urban nature, but we lack evidence on which forms of participation actually produce lasting ecological recovery, fair distribution of benefits, and durable public support. CO-ROOTS will co-design, test, and evaluate citizen-led restoration of climate-vulnerable urban forests and ecosystems in 6–8 living labs in Europe and Korea. It combines ecological monitoring of restoration outcomes, ecosystem services valuation, and analysis of participatory governance arrangements. From this evidence it will produce a validated Participatory Urban Restoration Framework, open data and digital tools for citizen monitoring, and policy guidance that helps cities meet urban green space and tree canopy obligations under the EU Nature Restoration Regulation.
We want to collaborate with other researchers for this research idea.
