Monitoring design and ecosystem condition monitoring for biodiversity accounting

About
The Biodiversity Footprint Company (TBFC) is looking to join a consortium for HORIZON-NATURE-2027-02-05, Cost-effective biodiversity monitoring for EU policies.
Monitoring only earns its cost if it answers the questions policy and business are actually asking. That is what we design for. We have built and applied:
-
GECKO (Global Ecosystem Condition Knowledge Outcome): a remote-sensing classification of ecosystem condition, developed with the mining sector and now being written up for peer review.
-
MESA (Manual Ecosystem State Assessment): a structured method for assessing ecosystem state, with explicit confidence levels, for places where data is thin.
-
Monitoring programme design and review for corporate sites, transforming compliance monitoring into voluntary target data, setting indicators, sampling effort and cost against what the results will be used for.
What we can contribute:
-
Lead or co-lead a work package on monitoring design, indicator selection or cost-effectiveness.
-
Lead or co-lead a work package on corporate natural capital accounting /biodiversity footprinting.
-
Combine Earth observation and field data to assess ecosystem condition, at scales from site to landscape.
-
Test methods with companies so the outputs are usable for CSRD/ESRS E4 and TNFD reporting as well as for EU policy.
-
Bring a Global South perspective and test sites outside Europe.
We were a research partner in the Horizon Europe project CircHive. South African organisations are eligible for Horizon Europe funding.
