About me
Jean Gomes, Ph.D., is a Physicist specialized in Astrophysics. He earned his doctorate from the University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, which included a sandwich research period at the Observatoire de Meudon, France. His research centered on galaxy formation & evolution, leveraging spectral synthesis and advanced optimization techniques. In recognition of his fundamental studies, he was awarded a PhD equivalence in Astrophysics by the University of Porto (UP) in 2015. Renowned for his expertise in computational astrophysics, multi-objective optimization, data mining, and software development, Jean bridges the academia-industry gap by harnessing innovative technologies to tackle complex challenges.
Currently, Jean serves as a Senior Researcher and Data Engineer in the Data and Application Engineering group at DTx Colab in Portugal. His technical expertise spans optimization, mathematical modeling, quantum annealer optimization with D-Wave systems, and MILP/MINLP approaches. Over his 20-year career, Jean has led and contributed to several high-profile international projects, including FP7-PEOPLE-2013-IRSES and PTCRIS initiatives, and served as Principal Investigator for the “Strategic Partnership in Astrophysics Portugal-Brazil” (FCT/CAPES 2017). He has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles, achieving an h-index of 27 and 5,735 citations (Google Scholar), underscoring his substantial impact on the field.
Jean held a position as an Invited Assistant Professor at the UP, where he mentored MSc/PhD students and advised undergraduate students, such as participants in the PEEC program. Under his guidance, numerous students completed research projects and advanced their careers. His expertise spans many areas, making him a key contributor to industry-academia collaborations and underscoring his significant influence across scientific and industrial domains.
