VUB-LSTS is actively involved in EU-funded security research in the role of legal and ethics compliance partner, playing a significant role in the successful implementation of large-scale collaborative projects in various fields, including: online crime detection and analysis, biometrics and identity management, policing and law enforcement, border surveillance, crisis and emergency management.

Our research group brings extensive experience in assessing actual regulatory responses and policy-making options against challenges posed by new and emerging technologies, including critical issues surrounding AI-powered systems. We support research consortia in navigating complex regulatory landscapes, policy frameworks and ethics compliance procedures for the development of innovative solutions, products and services in the domain of security, ensuring that citizens have confidence that technology not only achieves required security objectives, but doesn’t undermine fundamental rights, societal values, or legal protections of privacy.
