QWED is a Polish high-tech research-based SME with broad interests spanning from high-frequency electronics to material science. In May 2022 the company is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its commercial activities, with the scientifc background of its founders and experts dating back over 4 decades. QWED offers two families of flagship products:
-
Multiphysics simulation software QuickWaveTM, which provides electromagnetic, thermal, and materials’ modelling functionalities. Example applications are in the design of satellite communication antennas and systems, millimetre-wave components for 5G technologies, applicators for energy-efficient processing of biomaterials, microwave chemistry, and microwave imaging of energy materials. QuickWave software licences have been implemented by a diverse client base including radioastronomy laboratories (NRAO, JPL), biomedical research (CALTECH, Malardalen), food industry (Nestle), leading domestic microwave oven manufacturers (Whirlpool, BSH), and education worldwide.
-
Instruments for high-precision electromagnetic characterisation of materials. QWED designs and manufactures several types of dielectric and quasi-open resonators, which allow materials’ measurements and scanning in the GHz range. By targeting novel materials and emerging technologies, the sales continuosly increase, from the last decade average of 100 units per annum to 200 units sold in 2022; the 1000th unit of a microwave SPDR and the 1st unit of a novel mmWave FPOR sold in March and November 2020, respectively. The quality of QWED instruments has been recognised by industrial practitioners, leading researchers, and standard creators (European Standard: IEC 61189-2-721:2015, applications in NIST US).
Recent activities of QWED focus on exploring the synergies between computer modelling and materials characterisation, with specific interest for energy materials (EU H2020 MMAMA and NanoBat projects), 5G/mmWave frequencies (iNEMI and M-ERA.NET initiatives), green energy and automotive applications (NanoBat), and space research (ZPSK - Polish Space Industry Association). QWED team is active in the European Materials Modelling Council, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and IEEE Women in Engineering.
