About

I am interested in participating in a proposal for “HORIZON-CL3-2024-FCT-01-01: Mitigating new threats and adapting investigation strategies in the era of Internet of Things” topic. My research area is to apply IoT components in a general purpose IoT EMS system and I have experience in IoT hardware and software applications and research activities.

When we consider environment management systems at the market, it can easily be seen that the Turcom IoT project was launched to develop a cloud-based solution that can meet all needs in general. In the first phase of the project, how the Turcom IoT solution could be used to ensure the environmental conditions of a system room in accordance with the standards was put forward as a principle and a design was carried out accordingly.

In large data centers, cabinet systems are arranged in a certain order in a large area. In this cycle, the continuity of the cooling process and the operation of the systems in the safe conditions are ensured. If this system does not function correctly, the ambient temperature may rise to very high levels in a very short time; this may cause IT systems to malfunction, become disabled, or be shut down for protection. Apart from the cooling system, another important component in data centers is the power system. The power requirement per unit area of server systems placed in many cabinets in a small area can reach very large amounts and providing this power in a healthy and uninterrupted manner is a very critical issue for the systems to function properly.

The parameters that can be monitored in the Turcom IoT system are:

• Temperature and Humidity: It is important to monitor temperature and humidity levels in the environment. Overheating or humidity can affect the performance of hardware, even causing them to shut down or malfunction.

• Door Access and Motion Sensors: Door access and motion sensors can be used for physical security. These sensors are used to detect unauthorized access situations.

• Smoke Detectors: Smoke detectors can be used to detect fire hazards.

• Water Sensors: Water sensors that warn in case of water leaks or floods can enable intervention before the equipment is damaged.

• Power Quality Monitors: Sensors that warn in case of power fluctuations or outages can be used. In parallel with this, energy efficiency can also be monitored. If the PDU units providing power are managed devices, data can be received from them.

• UPS Status: The status and battery levels of UPS devices should be monitored. This protects devices against power outages.

• Electricity Consumption and Energy Efficiency: Monitoring electricity consumption and taking energy efficiency measures can reduce operating costs.

• Network Traffic and Performance: Monitoring network traffic and performance is important for detecting and resolving network problems.

• Hardware Status: The status, operating status and capacity usage of server, storage and network devices should be monitored.

• Physical Security Cameras: Security cameras can be used to observe the environment.

• Airflow and Cooling Systems: It is important to monitor heat dissipation and evaluate the effectiveness of cooling systems. Thanks to appropriate monitoring and warning systems, possible problems can be detected in advance and precautions can be taken.

The main prominent benefits of the Turcom IoT system are:

Cloud-Based Management: Being able to manage all environment parameters from the cloud environment will be an important breakthrough in the project. Each institution can manage its own system from a single point through the accounts defined for them. All sensor data must be transferred to the cloud environment via a gateway device.

Mobile Application Support: It is important for system and IT administrators to be able to monitor the current status and manage the system through a mobile application.

Sensor Diversity: Sensors of different brands, types or technologies can be used in the Turcom IoT system

Integration of Managed Systems: Systems such as PDU, server iDRAC-ILO, air conditioning have their own management interfaces.

Smart Camera System: In addition to continuous camera recording, it can provide an instant picture of the user's unusual or very different activities from historical data and send it to the system administrator.

Capacity Monitoring and Planning: Since an IT system is an integrated system within itself, the resources of the servers it contains should also be monitored from its own management platform.

ML and Trend Analysis: In the server system, all activities within a certain time period (such as user access, energy flow, change in the resource amounts of the servers) are recorded, and then when certain conditions occur, the authentication system is updated, information is provided regarding the resource needs, some measures are taken for the cooling system.
