About

VSB – Technical University of Ostrava (VSB-TUO) is a leading technical university in the Czech Republic with a strong tradition in raw materials, mining, energy, materials engineering, environmental technologies and industrial processes. Located in the Moravian-Silesian Region, one of the country’s major industrial areas, the university combines research expertise with close cooperation with industrial partners and access to real industrial processes and material streams.

VSB-TUO provides multidisciplinary expertise across the raw-material value chain, including primary and secondary raw materials, mineral processing, waste and by-product valorisation, materials characterisation, energy technologies, environmental assessment and circular-economy solutions. Its research infrastructure supports advanced chemical, mineralogical and material characterisation as well as evaluation of the environmental behaviour of complex materials.

Relevant capabilities include XRF, XRD, SEM-EDS, particle-size analysis and fractionation, chemical analysis, leaching and ecotoxicity testing, enabling the relationship between material composition, mineral phases, contaminant distribution, mobility and environmental effects to be investigated. These capabilities can support the development and validation of innovative processing and recovery technologies, including assessment of processed residues and secondary raw materials.

A particular strength is the combination of advanced material characterisation with environmental validation and detoxification approaches. This enables not only assessment of resource-recovery potential but also verification that residual material streams can be safely managed or valorised after processing. VSB-TUO also has experience with complex industrial mineral residues, including combustion-derived materials, and cooperation with industrial operators provides access to relevant samples, operational information and real process conditions.

For Horizon Europe projects, VSB-TUO can contribute to characterisation of complex raw materials and residues, identification of contaminant-bearing phases, assessment of element mobility and environmental risks, evaluation of detoxification efficiency, and validation of recovered materials and residual streams. The university is particularly interested in cooperation with industrial and research partners developing innovative technologies for raw-material processing, recovery of valuable and critical materials, and safe valorisation of secondary resources.

VSB-TUO is interested in participating as a research and validation partner in international, industry-driven consortia addressing sustainable raw-material processing and circular use of mineral resources.
