The BIOsignal Analysis for Rehabilitation and Therapy Research Group (BIOART) is an officially recognized research group by the Generalitat de Catalunya and belongs to the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).
The group applies engineering techniques to the medical field to improve rehabilitation processes and clinical therapies. These are evaluated and monitored through multichannel biosignal processing. Algorithms are efficiently designed so that the same techniques adapt and apply to respiratory, neuromuscular and neurological studies.
The main research objectives of the team are:
-
To develop quantitative tools to monitor muscular activity and fatigue tendency, as well as developing central nervous system control strategies for the muscular activation during rehabilitation exercises.
-
To provide new aid tools based on mathematical models to help clinicians to configure and manage the mechanical ventilation of severe respiratory insufficiency patients and for monitoring ventilatory disorders by studying the respiratory muscles.
-
To improve the detection and characterization of the brain’s activity and connectivity to evaluate it in the context of neuronal and neurodegenerative disorders, as well as in the drug therapy interaction with brain activity and its effects during sleep and wake.
-
To develop and management software tools to analyze and predict patient hospital stay, patient survival risk, and hospital resources logistics based on machine learning and statistical models.
