In vitro liver project (pre-company)
Other
Berlin, GermanyAbout
An early-stage, pre-company project to grow functional liver tissue in vitro, ultimately for transplantation.
The main open problems are mature cells of several liver cell types, tissue with working blood vessels and bile ducts, and cost. Cost is where the project starts: the cells, growth factors and media a liver needs are far too expensive today.
To fund the work along the way, the project plans to sell what liver cultures make anyway: plasma proteins, first for companion animals (no canine or feline albumin is sold in Europe), then for humans, later we are planning to sell test systems and process tools.
Status: no company, no funding, no lab data yet. Groundwork so far: interviews with veterinary university clinics in the DACH region, contacts with European animal blood banks, an analysis of the EU regulatory route, and a draft literature review.
Looking for: lab partners in liver, organoid or endothelial culture under flow; people working on cheaper growth factors and media; lab space for first experiments; a host institute for a joint funding application.
