About

THERMOGEN – Advancing Next-Generation Thermal Batteries

THERMOGEN addresses the challenge of stabilising a fully renewable European power system by developing a novel high-temperature (HT) thermal battery concept with direct heat-to-power conversion. The project focuses on exploiting temperatures above 1000 °C combined with selective thermophotovoltaic (TPV) crystal emitters, enabling efficient electricity generation without turbines or moving parts.

Key highlights:

  • Validation of an integrated thermal battery process using HT storage media (e.g. slag/ceramics)

  • Target round-trip efficiency of 40% at lab/relevant environment (TRL 4–5)

  • Clear techno-economic pathway towards reduced LCOS at industrial scale

  • Contribution to grid stability, energy sovereignty, and sector coupling (industry & district heating)

Consortium status: under formation, led by Hydrogen Valley DK.
Partners sought: HT materials & encapsulation, TPV/PV specialists, control & EMS software developers, and LCA/impact assessment experts.
