About

The Heschel Center for Sustainability

Energy Transition Think-Tank

The Heschel Center is a leading non-profit organization driving a paradigm shift in Israel, replacing fragmented, short-term responses with systemic, long-term solutions that connect climate, social equity, democratic resilience, and shared prosperity. At the heart of this shift stands Heschel’s Net ZerO Emissions project (NZO), Israel’s leading energy transition think-and-do tank, shaping how the country understands, plans, and implements its clean-energy transition.

Through NZO, we conduct rigorous, data-driven research and develop practical policy tools that address Israel’s most urgent energy challenges: demand flexibility, agri-voltaics, microgrids, and long-term modeling. Our expertise extends beyond this to collective self consumption, grid congestion solutions and advanced data analysis. We work with government ministries, regulators, industry partners, civil society organizations and dozens of local authorities- Jewish, Arab, and peripheral, to design scalable solutions that reduce energy poverty, strengthen regional resilience, identify barriers to national policy implementation, and make clean energy accessible to all.

Our vision centers on dual-use solar installations, especially within the built environment. We advocate for a smart, digital energy market that empowers consumers to participate actively and supports a more resilient, locally-managed future. NZO champions a just and inclusive transition to a post-carbon economy: one that protects nature, strengthens communities, and ensures that no one is left behind.

Additional Heschel’s flagship programs are sustainability leadership programs, and Lab for Citizens’ Assemblies that brings together randomly selected residents to learn, deliberate, and shape local decisions on issues such as climate and energy.

Heschel has proven European collaborations, and currently serves as the coordinator of a EuropeAid project on Just Transition to Renewables.
