Characterization of human exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF)

Director of Research at Cnr-Istituto di Elettronica e di Ingegneria dell’Informazione e delle Telecomunicazioni

Milan, Italy

About

My team has longstanding expertise in electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure and health. Over the past 25 years, we have participated—either as project coordinators or partners—in nearly all major EC-funded initiatives on this topic, covering the full spectrum from extremely low frequencies to radiofrequency and mmWave bands and beyond.

Currently we are partner in the GOLIAT EU-funded project (https://projectgoliat.eu/), focused on the health evaluation of the exposure to 5G and we coordinate the international project  EXPOAUTO on the evaluation on EMF exposure in smart and connected vehicles (https://www.ieiit.cnr.it/research/projects/current-projects/expoauto).

Our group has extensive experience in EMF exposure assessment across the entire frequency range relevant to technologies used in:

  • Smart grid, energy-efficient buildings;

  • Wireless charging systems, batteries, and powertrains for light- and heavy-duty EVs in zero-emission transport;

  • Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility (CCAM), with a specific emphasis on exposure linked to the widespread deployment of V2X communications.

We can support policymakers and local authorities by providing reference data on typical EMF levels and by recommending optimized layouts to minimize exposure.

Assessing EMF exposure is not only relevant—it is essential. It directly shapes public perception of safety and trust in the environments where people live and work, which is a central concern for any Society Readiness Pilot that aims to address societal needs and expectations.
