The Rural Energy Agency (REA) is a Tanzanian government agency established to oversee the implementation of rural electrification projects and improve energy access in rural and underserved areas of the country. Its mission is to accelerate the development of sustainable energy solutions, particularly renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind, and small hydropower, to support socio-economic development in rural communities.
REA works to empower local communities by providing reliable, affordable, and environmentally sustainable energy options. The agency supports the construction of energy infrastructure, promotes energy access initiatives, and partners with both public and private sectors to enhance energy availability. Its objectives include reducing energy poverty, improving the quality of life in rural areas, and contributing to the nation’s economic growth through increased access to modern energy services.
Additionally, REA plays a key role in policy advocacy, strategic planning, and the implementation of Tanzania's Rural Energy Master Plan (REMP). It also monitors and evaluates the progress of rural energy projects to ensure they are meeting their objectives and making a lasting impact.
