Leveraging Early-Stage Funding to De-risk Development – Insights from the Comoros Archipelago

 Island geothermal projects typically carry higher risk and cost than mainland equivalents, due to remote settings, limited prior subsurface data, and the unique geology of islands, including constraints around fresh water supply. Planning for success therefore requires development funding to be applied where it de-risks both the resource and subsequent exploratory phases—particularly drilling—through rigorous, integrated work programs spanning geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and hydrology. The resulting pre-feasibility roadmap becomes the basis for unlocking further development aid.
