Understanding the Geothermal Context in the Azores

Situated atop the triple junction of the North American, Eurasian, and African tectonic plates, the Azores archipelago is one of the world’s most distinctive environments for geothermal energy. This session will explore not only the development of geothermal resources (now supplying over 40% of electricity on São Miguel and a significant share on Terceira) but also their role in shaping the islands’ broader sustainable development pathway.
